Card Reader not working

I have card reader built into my desktop. The card reader has stopped working for both Compact Flash and SD cards.
When the cards are inserted nothing happens – the PC doesn’t recognise them and they do not show when going to ‘My Computer’.
The USB, firewire, microphone and speaker sockets on the same panel all work OK; and I can read the SD card by inserting it into a USB adapter.(I don’t have an adapter for CF cards)
On Device Manager in Win XP I assume that it is the ‘Winbond Smartcard reader’ it states “on Intel(R) 82801FB LPC Interface Controller”(whatever that means). I have checked the driver for that appliance and it states that it is OK.
I have been away for a couple of weeks and my wife and daughter assure me that they have rarely used the PC as they have their own laptops. They only used it to print some documents and have not used the Card Reader.
I don’t know if it relevant but an icon has appeared on my toolbar called RealSecure “Desktop Protector”. No idea what this is, I have the full Norton Security Suite.
Anyone any ideas please?

Thanks,
I wonder how Realsecure got to be on my PC???
Do you think it is hardware or software problem on the card reader, and can anything be replaced to effect a cure?0 -
suspect it's hardware
Real Secure is normally on corporate or school pcs
if you look back through your Restore points you may see if it was installed while you were awayEx forum ambassador
