Speech & Language Therapy

My son, four & a half, requires Speech & Language Therapy (SALT).
This was always a possibility following complications at his birth.
He is in nursery (pre-school year; equiv. to reception in England) where funding has been applied for 1:1 support.
Here in Glasgow, my area being the 'quickest' of Glasgow, the wait for SALT is about a year.
I know the charity 'Cerebra' can provide vouchers towards the cost of private SALT but so far I haven't enquired further about whether diagnosis would be required for an application.
I am awaiting re referral to the Development Paediatrician. How long that will take I don't know.
I have no money as such, but I do have a credit card.
My son could do with the SALT now.
Any other parents chosen to get further in debt to fund the likes of SALT?

Hi J-baby, welcome to the board
The family fund also offers grants, so maybe you could get funding from two sources (sorry I don't know if that is allowed?)
Have you tried posting on the carers thread? - someone there might have some advice?
Hugs

hi , i know a year seems a long time to wait but when they do start speech and language therapy they come on leeps and bounds my son is now 6 and has been going for a year now and the difference is amazing .
if i was you i would wait till you had a placement as they all use different aids and ways to help ,and it's best if they keep to one therapist as this can lead to confusion0 -
Something I wouldn't hesitate paying for if my child needed it. With therapy services many who pay privately also state the experience and progress is much better. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
Thank you all for the replies.
I am going to go for free assessment at a local speech therapist, & if successful, fund it myself. (god love credit cards)
My son has been hitting out, maybe due to frustration at not being understood.
I feel it is in his best interests to forge ahead & get SALT started.
Thanks again.0 -
I used the speech therapy service in Ayr, and they were fantastic.
Good luck with your son, and I hope you don't have to wait too long.0 -
Cant you get your GP to refer you to a local government based speech & language therapist. You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0
