looking at a friends PC which gets

0x000000ED: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

on boot up , regardless of which option I choose to boot up in....last good , safe, safe with Networking etc

I can boot with knoppix and see the hardisk and that passes diagnostics so i think it is the above.....

any way back apart from a re-install of OS (no Dell Restore disks !!)

Did you try the following as per the info in the link:

If this is the case, restart the computer to the Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.

To do this, use the following steps: 1. Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive.
    2. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
    3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
    4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so.

NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
    5. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
    6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. For additional information about how to use the Recovery Console in Windows XP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
314058 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/EN-US/) Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command.

Have you got a Win XP cd ?
A friend at work had the 0x000000ED: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error and recovered ok.

He booted the machine from the Win XP cd and used the "Recover" option to run the CHKDSK /R command.

Also as it is a DELL, look at this - http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?c=us&cs=04&DN=1068977&l=en&s=bsd

if you need a dell windows xp disk then look on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk, they go dead cheap.

The only way your going to restore windows is loading windows up, new install in a different folder, your would be c:/windows

    Install windows as: C:/winxp

or anything you like, but your gonna need that disk. Once you have installed a new windows then you will be able to access your files by going to the c:/windows folder. Id suggest going out and buying a new hard drive, they are about £20 or less and you could store you files, docs etc on second hard drive and the OS and program files on the other.

Ive got 3 hdd's in my pc, complete protection from anything.

Sounds like your config has buggered up.
    Kind Regards
    Bill
