Sussex Free Range Lamb - do you think this is a good deal?

Hi everyone,

I have started trying to source meat and fish more locally. With surrounding farms a plenty and living in a fishing town, I have no excuse to do otherwise and we aren't having to watch the pennies quite as much as previously so I thought I would make the effort.

I picked up half a lamb, sourced from a nearby farm, slaughtered on Wednesday and prepared into joints which I collected today and wondered what you thought of the deal (obviously I haven't eaten the meat yet, but just based on the £45 cost).

I got the following, totalling 9.92 Kg:

7 Loin Chops
8 Cutlets
3 Chump Chops
Lamb Liver
1 kidney
Shoulder (fairly big with bone in)
Leg (big leg with bone in)
4 stewing cuts

Obviously, its gone in the freezer.

The farm does half a pig for the same price too.

It seems a pretty good deal to me, but I am so unused to buying like this, its all new to me so I wondered if anyone else out there could provide their feedback.

I got a locally sourced lamb direct from the farmer last week and paid about £70 for the whole lamb. It weighed nearly 15kg. There were 2 legs (!) weighing about 6lb each, 2 shoulders about the same, but I cut these in half. 2 kidneys, there was the neck in chunks then 2 pks of cutlets and 2 packs of chops. I was pleased as it's the best lamb I ever get.

    Thanks for the responses.

I thought it was a fairly good deal.

We had some cutlets which were pretty good. So far so good anyway!

Was just about to PM and ask the same thing! Please PM me Angela and let me know where you got it, I'm in Heathfield so probably not too far from me.
I think it sounds like a really good deal, works out just over £4.50 a Kilo which is darn cheap for any meat!
To be honest I wouldn't have the freezer space but was considering sharing the cost, meat and a freezer with friends. eg, I go get it, they keep most at their house, we split the cost. If it's that cheap I suggest more people do that!

    Hi there,

OH and I recently ordered a whole lamb from our local butcher. it was 26 kg in weight and we paid £104, ie £4 per kilo. Apparently, this was a big lamb and they are normally about 21 kg, so your price seems about right.

I thought this was great value. Lamb in the supermarket can be up to about £14 per kilo!! Of course, the meat from the butcher is of much better quality too.

Yes I am quite close to both of you - I am in St Leonards on Sea.

The farm shop is in Westfields, near Hastings. I ordered my lamb a week in advance. I'm not sure if they delivery, but I prefer to have an excuse to go back to look at the farm shop!

Looks like a great deal and a massive food mile saving too. Anyone know any farms nearer the North side of London where the same sort of deal can be obtained?

I think that with lamb they call the hind legs "legs" and the from legs "shoulders" - possibly with "shanks" if the lamb is big enough.
