Logged on to my laptop yesterday and a message pops up saying ‘Windows has detected SPYWARE INFECTION’. Windows XP is the operating system.
After clicking on the icon which recommends installing ‘Windows Defender’, it fails and the message displayed is ‘Verify that you have sufficient privileges’ to start system services’.
I, then tried to install ‘AVG free’ software to get rid of the Spyware, and again there is a error message ‘1 error and 7 warnings occurred’ and the details are as follows…
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgemc.exe: starting service....
Error 0x8007041d
Warning: Preparation to unload of the service avg8wd failed.
Specified file was not found.
Rollback:
Warning: Action failed for directory Cfg: removing directory....
Error 0x80070091
Warning: Action failed for directory Log: removing directory....
Error 0x80070091
Warning: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: stopping service....
Service AvgMfx86 failed to progress during stopping at checpoint 0 (wait hint 10000 ms) in 91000 ms.

Windows XP has never desplayed a message like that ".. SPYWARE INFECTION..." it does not have any proceedures to deal with that, it's just a pop up that asked you to click a link that I think you then did........0 -

Sam, as suggested above please download and run MalwareBytes
Malware Bytes
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
I would also download Hijack This so we can see if there is anything else;
Save HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon to start the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.
Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.0 -
Reluctant_spender...thanks for your advice, should I get rid of 'AVG free' through Control Panel ---> Add Remove Programs
I have also got rid of Norton now..through 'Norton Removal Tool'0 -
You need a anti virus product - If you already have AVG and are/were happy with it then reinstall it.
Sorry, yes uninstall it, reboot and then reload it, especially after reading your first post.
If not then download another - antivir is free and so is avast
Antivir - http://www.free-av.com/en/products/index.html
Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html0 -
Sorry to hook onto this post - my McAfee free 30 day trial with a new laptop ends next week. I dont want to pay when free versions are out there.
Several people on here and a personal contact have suggested AVAST which I read, having followed the above post (thanks reluctant spender) also includes antispyware.
OK - once trial runs out, presumably I uninstall any McAfee via control panel / add & remove programs. Then go to link above and install AVAST. Having done that, will the relevant Windows firewall / defewnder etc be set to the right thing i.e. do I want it on or off etc?
TIA
What else do I need?If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:0
