Current VirginMedia customer who wants PVR....best way?

I have been on the Medium TV package for VirginMedia for a couple of months now (reasonably impressed - esp by iPlayer).
I would like the PVR type ability that my Freeview recorder offered but it seems very expensive with Virgin.
From what I can gather although its not clear of teh costs fro current Virgin Customers....

V+ Service
£0.00 a month for TV Size: XL
The current £50 off discount does not seem to apply to existing cust.
So that’s £150 to install and then 12 months at £5 to 'rent' your V+ box = £210 a year.
That seems pretty steep to me when a Freeview PVR can be had to under £100.
Has anyone managed to get this cheaper, any wangles out there?
I got Virgin as my flat has no TV reception - might be cheaper to get my Ariel fixed!!
PS. I don't need extra channels but if the price was right would like HD
PPS. I live in listed building so unfortunately cannot have freesat.

For that sort of price, I think you would be better of with a DVD recorder with hard-drive.
The advantage of that would be the ability to archive programs you want to keep by copying them to DVD's .. the latest Sony models are pretty good .. I bought a Sony RDR-HXD870 a few months ago and it's a brilliant piece of kit!
You could link it to your Virgin box and with the right set-up, get freeview through it too!0
