I bought a Smeg A42 cooker 2 years 9 months ago - list price was nearly £1500, but I paid £1000. This week I've had to call the engineers as the oven fan was VERY noisy - it has to be replaced - also the grill thermostat is on it's way out so is being replaced too! With the £65 call out and parts I'm looking at £200 - £250 to repair it.
When I rang Smegs customer service they wouldn't even provide spares at cost - due to the 'age' of the cooker. Although I've use the oven once or twice a week maximum, and can work away for weeks/ months at a time. I'm really p****d off. . She even had the cheek to tell me that next time I should purchase an extended warranty
I've also had a table delivered from John Lewis today, took me months to find the one that would fit - It's got a smashed corner, and there are no more in stock
I don't think today is my day! :xmassmile Oh well - it'll soon be history!

I would suggest a strongly worded letter to Smeg reminding them that the cooker has to be fit for the purpose it was brought for - you'd certainly expect a cooker to last more than a couple of years, wouldn't you??

You're right, I've been looking at the Which website, and details about consummer law. It appears I might well have an argument as the goods have to be 'fit for purpose' for a 'reasonable time'. I think it would be fair to say that under 3 years for an stove of this price is 'unreasonable'. I will be contacting them with a very strongly worded letter - (but after I've spoken to Which's legal experts who are available free until february'.0

If the above fails then try a generic repair service as Hotpoint, Creda and Smeg (among others, use the same parts) If you Google cooker spares a lot of sites come up and may get a better idea of what parts should really cost.
Hope this helps
This is a good read too!

My Smeg dishwasher broke down a few weeks ago and its only 15 months old. I have just paid £60 for a specialist to come out and look at it. (No other repair people would come out because it was Smeg and they said they were a major hassle to repair as the whole unit has to be pulled out. The door was broke and its requires a new 'switch board' which will cost £150-£200. It cost £300 new so I might not be far off the original cost. Engineer said Smeg hardly have any probs and suggested I write to Smeg. At 8 months pregnant I can ill afford this and I feel that I have just paid for the name and should have stuck to Indesit which in the past have lasted years. Might get in touch with Which mag and see if they can help.
