Noisy water pipe

Can anyone help?

The water pipe that refills the tank in the loft, connected to the mains, is very noisy. It is not the valve in the tank itself as this has been replaced with a silent one. It's driving me and the neighbors mad!

Thanks

    what kind of noises does the pipe make when re-filling your tank??

    is it like a banging noises when it closes off??

    eg as the tank finishes filling does it make aloud bang then the pipe work seems to 'shudder' through the house?

    let us know!!
  • Replacing ball valves rarely cures water hammer, it is the vibration it causes (usually on a loose jumper in a stopcock elsewhere) that makes alot of the noise, and true equlibrium valves are actually quite difficult to get hold of. Usually installing a double check valve followed by a miniature expansion vessel immediately after the incoming stopcock will cure it. If the mains pressure is excessively high then an adjustable pressure reducing valve may help also.
  • There are no bang or hammer type noises, just the sound like the water is being forced through a constriction. I don't know how else to describe it.

    I will follow up on your suggestions. Thanks
  • Not sure if you mean whether its within in the tank for the pipes that feed it.
    I used to have a toilet that was noisey when filling back up. A quick look in the cistern showed that a plastic pipe that attached to the value at the top of the cistern had fallen off. This pipe allowed the water to enter from the bottom of the cistern and once the end was submerged it was almost silent when refilling. Might be an idea if the noise is in the tank to attach a pipe to it so it essentially fills from the bottom.
    Cheers

    These valves often contravene water regulations, there should be a 'type A' air gap between the spout of the ballvalve and the surface of the water and the overflow should be a minimum 50mm lower than the ballvalve to prevent contamination of the water main. A double check valve is not always sufficient to offset this problem, as all hairdressers and print workshops now have to have RPZ non-return valves (incorporating complicated filters and breaks to avoid chemical contamination of the water main) that cost around £150. The problem sounds like excessive pressure whining as it passes through the restrictive waterway of the ballvalve as it is closing and I would probably try a pressure reducing valve (adjustable and with a gauge fitted preferably) first.
