Help with insulation costs?

We've had loft insulation on our 'round-to-it' list for as long as I can remember. I was just wondering when these promises of GB's will come in? From this article it seems that by the time we get guys in to do the insulation for us (next summer) we'd have lost the money we'd save - does that make sense?

So what I'm asking (through all the waffle) is whether I bother trying to apply for reduced cost insulation and carry on leaking money, or just bite the bullet and take a trip to my friendly local DIY giant?

Cheers!

  • Hi

From what I understand, it already available. I think its the actual insulation work that they expect to be completed by 2020:beer:
    This ain't no technological breakdown..
Oh no, this is the road to hell.:(

im pretty sure there are similar threads on here but for my two penneth i would get it done asap.

local installers offer subsidised schemes from energy companies, im sure you could get hold of a scheme locally.
We had ours done as part of an N-power scheme (all my utilities are with British Gas).
the installer put an extra 200mm of blown insulation in our loft (3 bed semi) for £149. I priced up even the cheapest rolls of insulation on offer and could only get it for £160. No brainer!:money:

for info, this was KHI insulation from nottingham - google energy grants in your area and get some quotes, all should be no-obligation.
I am a building surveyor and will provide advice based upon what you tell me. It is just that, advice and not instructions. Based on the fact you're getting it for free expect it to be vague! :D
  • I'm being nosey now, but when you say 'blown' insulation what do you mean please? Is it blown into the loft floor between the joists or is it, like I've seen advertised, white stuff that seems to be sprayed onto the roof intself.

If its blown into the gaps between the joists I wondered what they do to keep the ventilation at the eaves....

I would be be really pleased if it the stuff that goes on the roof as it would then keep the cold water tank warmer.

Welcome to MSE. The grants are currently running and you don't need to wait ages. I used a company in Leicester who quoted and fitted within 10 days. £199.

You can't buy the stuff yourself and claim the grant, the installation companies have to do it for you. Use a national company (EDF etc) or search out a local supplier who will administer the grant on your behalf and fit it all for less than you'll be spending in B&Q for materials alone.
