Excess Baggage

Hi
I will be travelling from Melbourne, Australia to London Heathrow in December and was wondering what the best way to get c10kg of excess baggage back.
I'm flying with Qantas and the last time I checked they wanted to charge 32 pounds a kg.
So far I think posting it is the cheapest option as I've been quoted $200 compared to $700 by an excess baggage company.
Does anybody have experience of this and know the cheapest method?

I used www.jetta.com.au a few years back to get 45kgs to the UK - they send your stuff as unaccompanied baggage. Price was very reasonable compared to excess baggage charges. Items were picked up from my home before I went to the airport. However they arrived at the destination airport about 5 days after I arrived meaning a trip to the airport to pick up.0 -
is it 10kg all in one bit?
no chance of cramming some into the carry on , few bits in pockets etc
if you can get the cases down to a few over a smile might get you through with little/no charges0 -
We used Jetta when we came from Australia to the UK. It is sent as excess baggage on a plane and they aim to have your bag arrive at a similar time to yourself.
They need 15kgs minimum, and they will pick up from your house.
However, you need to go to the cargo area of Heathrow to pick it up (a real adventure) and pay customs import tax, which for us was (I think) about £50.
I agree with the previous poster - cram everything you can into pockets of coats and carry on luggage, if you are only a few kgs over in your checked luggage most major airlines will let you get away with it in my experience.0 -
you often see people board with a huge coat , hand bag , carry on trolley, camera , duty free and airport shopping bags etc etc
before ive maxxed up my carry to the max allowance , then have a carrier bag that i try to keep out of sight , if they ask why have you got that bag , say its some snacks im gona eat before we fly a coat /jumper etc , theyre always okay with that0 -
How quickly do you want your stuff? If you post it to yourself via seamail it costs about £50 up to 20 kg. Should take about 6 weeks I think.0
