    IANAL but it seems to me whoever or whatever caused the accident that means you can no longer drive a manual car is at fault here.

    Seems like pretty poor timing too.

    If the shoe was on the other foot and you had gone back the following day and he had sold it to someone else?

    It is an unfortunate set of circumstances but unless you can gain their sympathy I do not see that you can do a lot.
    I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
