Fuel Poverty

Options
I am now spending 11% of my income on fuel - offcially just into the fuel poverty bracket. I have energy efficient bulbs, a capped energy plan, an A rated central heating boiler, turn everything off at the wall, freezer is full, appliances were A rated when bought. I don't have a thermostat - I can't get anyone to install one, even when I offer to pay, I sit with up to three blankets, hot water bottle, etc before putting on heating. I have a joint condition that means cold makes me in a lot more pain so I can't do without heat all together.

I can't have cavity wall insulation and about the only thing I can see that would help is the carpets and double glazing I can't afford - I can't even afford the plastic stuff you hairdrier onto the windows. I am on DLA and income support. I have loft insulation - topped up last three years ago, which has made a large difference.

What can I do - warm front already did the loft insulation and didn't give me a thermostat. I am freezing, I hurt and I am getting into debt, soon to choose between heat and eat.

  • I can't do that I'm afraid - I capped about six months ago and I'm tied in with Scottish Power (capped when my husband was working)
  • If it were more advantageous for you to change to Southern Electric, their is a £50 cancellation fee to pay to Scottish Power which in the long run may pay you to do.I am currently with S.P and will consider switching if Gas @Elect prices come down.I am locked in as well.
  • Just another though log on to The Warmth and Comfort Scheme and see if you could qualify for help from them. My radiators did not have thermostatic valves on so they installed new ones. There are a lot of options, hope some help you.
