TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE SAYING LINUX IS EASY, THIS IS WHY IT ISN'T.
OK, somewhere in the menu system should be an entry for "terminal". Run that and you end up with the equivalent of a Windows Command Prompt box. At the command prompt type:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
..which is what it's telling you to do.
You'll be prompted for a password which is the one for your username.
As for no sound, there should be a speaker icon somewhere.
dpkg makes it sound like it's based on Debian Linux. Ubuntu is as well so it may be worth asking on www.ubuntuforums.org to see if anyone can help. They do plain English there.
Sadly when things go wrong with Linux, helping someone non techy over the net tends to go wrong because it can get very involved and end up being quite technical very quickly.0 -
who says linux is easy ????
They Lie!
Thanks Connor the sound icon has disappeared? When I do Fn and F9 its blank volume iconIsn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?0 -
If the sound icon is missing or blank then i would say that the OS is not picking up the hardware. Do you know what OS you have on there? I am doing alot of linux stuff at the moment and would be happy to help! :-)0

As someone said ,the ubuntu forums are the place to be. A real wealth of info and once youve learned how to use a terminal window,a lot of fixes to problems simply mean copying and pasting command lines into it. Only copy and paste commands from trusted sources,i.e trusted longstanding posters/gurus on ubuntu forums.0

Trust me, that's more by luck than design.:D
I can do what I want to get done with Linux and I know how to go find solutions and I can even fix things if I'm sat at a keyboard but I'm far from conversant in it - certainly not at the stage I am with Windows where I can go "Oh yeah, just do this this that and that and you're done".0 -
The Register have just started a series 'The netbook newbie's guide to Linux' to help new users.
