Contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance, when to claim?

I know you can only claim contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance up to 6 months, but do those 6 months have to be the first 6 months of you being unemployed? Or can you claim it having already been unemployed for 6 months? Say you just realised you are entitled to the allowance..
