Im dyslexic but I am not sure if I can be of much help as I have had a chequered educational journey.

Anyway living with dyslexia is mostly ok, to me its normal and its only when I compare myself with other that I see my limitations.
I cant map read, I just dont get it, so I can get anxious when I have to go somewhere new, I get easily confused and lost, which I hate and have struggled with the last few weeks as I have just started at Uni.
I have a terrible short term memory so have to take notes and re-read them at intervals for the info to go in. I can watch a film and have forgotten it by the time i have left the cinema!
I am a active learner, I need info to go in via more that one way, for example if reading I need to read out loud for the info to have any hope of retaining the detail.
Dyslexia is not the end of the world, adapt and find ways round the limitations. Spell check is good but it sucks when not even spell check can understand the typos!

All in all its not me with the problem, I have dyslexia.. and??? :-)

If I can help, just ask!
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
  • lewt what specific advice on it do you need ?

Two of my children are dyslexic. It's a very broad term for a specific learning difficulty and can vary widely from one individual to another.
My best advice if you have a child with dyslexia would be to speak to their educational psychologist who will be able to give you detailed information about how exactly it affects your child. Alternatively if your child has a statement you should be offered help and support from the local Parent Partnership who will be able to point you in the right direction locally to find more information.

The British Dyslexia Association website should be of some help too

    Hi there,

A couple of my good friends have dyslexia, though I don't think they've been on a course relating to it - did you need some specific advice? If you can give us a context for the question it would help us to answer better :)

The dyslexic institute run courses for parents with children who are Dyslexic. If you speak to your special needs teacher at school they should be able to provide this information. Or ckick on the link that it is above, or phone them up and ask.

    They are really helpful.

What area are you from? I have been on courses in the past for my son who is dyslexic and im doing a part time course at college and found out im dyslexic too! My college have been a real help, fidning out exactly what is good strengths and weakness and help you with that.

Could you contact your local college? For children there is parentline plus who would be able to point you in the right direction
