If we told you that they started ReactOS when Windows 98 was released and they're only at this stage, do you share the same view that its not a bad start and they're only a few months away from something usable?

    Why be so negative?

I didn't say that they are only a few months away. My own guess when I wrote "a good few months away" was 18 months, but as I said, it depends whether they get development resource.

If we told you that the first Linux kernel was released in 1992, and that we have only recently seen releases that the ordinary person in the street might think of using, why would you raise the fact that ReactOS has only been around for a decade?

Perhaps because Linux has been deployed en masse with high levels of success, acceptance and is constantly evolving to keep on the edge of the envelope where React OS panders to an outdated Windows model for no apparent reason than for something to do.

React OS has no place in the home or office, it's just a hobby.

Fair enough - you obviously know a lot more about ReactOS than I do. As is obvious from what I've posted above, I wasn't even aware of its existence until yesterday!

I'm happy to look at it with an open mind, but I can see your point. They will always be trying to hit a moving target that's being set by someone else, so they will always be using an outdated model.

There's still some appeal to the principle of something that behaves like Windows but is Open Source, if only for the benefit of people in countries where they can't afford to buy an OS. But in that situation it probably makes more sense to take an existing Linux kernel and make it look more Windows-like, which is something that's being done anyway.
