In short:
If you book an advance ticket for a particular train then you must get that train. It is tough if you are late - just make sure you get there on time.0 -
Will depend on the operator but with Virgin you can get return off-peak tickets which will allow you to take any off-peak journey on the day the ticket is valid, I've used them a couple of times in the past month when I've found my appointment has finished earlier than expect - what you have to make sure is that you don't take a peak-time train as your ticket will be invalid and purchasing the correct one will be expensive
goto http://www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/ and it'll give you all the options on a day rail travel and very brief sentence on the type of ticket
One thing I don't know is when off-peak starts/ends, on Monday I took a 7:50am train that was classed as off-peak which I assume was because it didn't arrive in London till 11:30am?0 -
It does not depend on the operator. If you have an advance ticket for a particular train, you MUST get that train.
All companies offer walk-up (on the day) off peak tickets, not just Virgin.0 -

If you genuinely mean off peak, then yes, any off peak train.
If you mean an advance ticket, then no.
Post up (or PM me) the start and end stations and the price you paid, and I will clarify what type of ticket it is and the precise restriction.0
