Home insurance: additional policyholder?

Options
Hi,

Please could you advise on getting contents insurance?

My wife and I are moving down to London next week. She has a job but I'm looking for work there. We need to get contents insurance (never had it before), and I would like to put the policy in my name, but as I'm unemployed it seems to cost more.

So I tried putting the policy in my wife's name, which was cheaper, and I see there is an option to add an additional policyholder - what exactly is this i.e. how would this benefit us? Would this mean that I would also gain one year's no claims (provided of course we didn't claim)?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

I doubt you would both get the no claims, but in any case you would still only want one policy again next year, wouldn't you? Therefore only one bonus needed.

I think - but stand to be corrected here - that the benefit of having a second named policyholder would be that either of you could phone to make a claim, whereas if there's only one policyholder named then that's the person who'd have to do all your business with them.

As Sue has said, I think the 2 people being able to talk on the phone is the major benefit of 2 people being named on the policy.

I don't think extra discounts are given for more than 1 person.

I would probably avoid it if one of you has a high risk job like "exotic dancer" "sportsperson" "journalist" etc and use the other persons occupation.

  • Savvy_Sue, Ben, thank you very much for your advice. I think it'll be okay to add myself as an additional policy holder.

By the way, if I got just contents insurance with Lloyds, would I still qualify for the 50 pounds (or however much it is) cashback on some of the cashback sites? (ie if I don't buy buildings insurance as well)

    Thanks!!
