How many decades of computer energy do you need to save to recoup £14.99 that this gadget costs, or has cost in the manufacture of it? Is it worth the expense?Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

Exactly some of these companies are exploiting the market and giving it a bad name, I dont care if it wins awards, it costs money to make and ship and its so easy to configure you pc on most cases to shutdown
A simply press of the 'sleep' button on the keyboard shuts down pc to hibernate mode. Fair enough some older pcs may not do this, but its just as easy to shutdown a old computer and take a couple of miutes to boot up0 -

You are completely missing the point here !
What is the point of "saving the planet" if you can't brag about having the latest in expensive eco-gadgetry to do it ?
People get bored when I tell them, at length, about my "sleep" button - they actually fall asleep when I mention the on/off switch on the wall !
I must go - my £75 eco-kettle powered by my £10,000 wind turbine has just boiled 325ml of water for my tea - and saved me 0.375p and shaved 41.7 microgrammes of carbon off my footprint (whatever that might be !).

Ever hear the saying 'A fool and his money'
That just about suits people who buy this, a button that hibernates your pc, whoppe I think I already got one of them on my keyboard its called 'sleep' and its eco friendly and guess what it costs nowt
Yea it sure may not sound as nice, than a bright green button, but it sure as hell does the same job. I also got a program that came with pc mobo that says how much energy I saved too as it has a 6 phased energy option to power down, ram, chipset, cpu, hdd, fans and video card and I got a efficient psu sure the latter costs abit moremoonrakerz wrote: »You are completely missing the point here !

I just saw this product on 'the natural collection' I'm very disappointed as it is a site that in the past has had some good products, I think I'll email them and bring it to their attention. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

Best replace what sits between the keyboard and the chair imho. Just think your council could be buying 1,000 of these things.:j:eek:0

What's worse is the fact that the PSU on the computer is still on and powering the motherboard. Then as everyone knows a good hard reboot is the best thing for Windows, constantly going to hibernate is a very good recipe if you like slow PCs and corrupt memory.
Further, there's the backup problem in a corporate environment.
At work, all your files should be backed up to a server, and if you leave the PC in hibernate, you're leaving files potentially locked and open, which means the backup taken on the servers may not be reliable for your personal data. Not all your files are actually on your PC, but a redirected drive back to the server.A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -

I own one and use it at work and have so far saved £2.00 (I work for a VERY small company and like to be green everywhere I go). Every time you go back to your computer it tells you how much energy I have saved and how much money...so if I carry on like this it would have paid for itself in 4 months (I've had it less than a month)
This from the Eco Button site:
"Q: Does my PC go into 'Hibernate' mode when ecobutton™ is engaged?
A: No, ecobutton™ does not put your PC into Hibernate mode. ecobutton™ educates your PC to use the lowest power mode available to it whilst at the same time, remain capable of waking up quickly for you to resume work.
Q: What kind of sleep mode does ecobutton™ actually engage, is it just the normal Stand By mode?
A: No, ecobutton™ does not employ the normal Stand By mode (although you may get the on screen message 'Preparing to Stand By' when you use your ecobutton™, this is simply a default of windows and not an accurate statement in relation to your ecobutton™). The mode that ecobutton™ engages is a deeper energy saving mode than the regular Stand By mode you usually find on a Windows PC.
ecobutton™ mode turns off all the components inside your system except the essential memory. When in ecobutton™ mode your system is using as little as 1.8 watts. "
My computer is completely silent when the Eco Button is being used unlike when I put it to "sleep" but that's just mho.0 -

But this surely tells you how much you've saved compared to having your computer on, rather than compared to having it in sleep mode?
So your saving compared to just using the sleep mode instead would be minimal.0 -

I posted this on another thread, but here it is again.
My computer uses the same amount of electricity in hibernate mode as it does when switched off (using start button and "turn off computer", or the button on the front) not when properly switched off.
It is easy to set the button on the front to sent the computer into hibernate instead of turning it off. I also posted a method of creating a short cut to hibernate mode too, which I use several times per day.
I also found that when in hibernate or off mode it was not the computer that was using a lot of leccy, it was all the "bits" attached to it. In hibernate of "off" modes it was still using about 50 watts, but then I dug out one of those plugs that turn all the bits off when you switch off or go into hibernate and the leccy used dropped to around 6 watts.
I have never had any problems with my computer slowing down or corrupt memory, or even backup problems since starting to use the hibernate method. I do switch it off at the wall each night, but during the day once it is switched on it stays on and goes into hibernate if I leave it for any length of time.
As for causing problems in a corporate environment, only if the IT person is cr*p. Which most are!0
