do people actually fail theory tests?

Apparently! I found the theory questions really easy (passed every one!) – the hazard perception part was rather less so, and if you click too many times you fail on the basis that you clearly have no idea!

    Sadly,

I personally think anyone thick enough to fail them should be banned from driving for life, only a total retard could fail them Q An old lady is crossing road, do you A) Slow down and stop until clear B) Stop and rev engine to hurry her along C) Continue on your trip as you have right away

    The questions are that simple

As for the OP I think they need to question whether there son is just limited, as opposed to a workshy !!!!wit, 2 years of looking and no job suggests the latter

That's a bit harsh! MOST of the questions are as simple as you have stated (and I too would wonder how someone could fail) however there were one or two questions that I might have struggled with, e.g., where would you dispose of a car battery? If you have never had cause to do this, why would you know?!

The OP has said that her son is less academic than his sisters but that doesn't mean he's a "workshy !!!!wit" as you so charmingly suggested – he's doing a vocational college course which would require a certain level of intelligence and ability and will more than likely lead to gainful employment at the end of it!

What where the answers to that question ? A) A fire B) A River c) take it to an authorised recycler/disposer

Sorry but I stick by the comments, even the harder questions are common sense or easily learned within 5 minutes

As for the next bit, anyone who cannot find one of the thousands of part time jobs out there, in shops, bars, cafes, etc etc, is workshy, no matter their claims it being impossible

Its not only the theory, the Hazard Perception has now been introduced which is difficult to get to grips with. There are many other categories including road signs, important documents etc that you fail to mention its not AS SIMPLE AS your one example. If it was that simple you wouldnt need to officially pass the theory we'd just walk on into the test centre.

Another point is disabled people have the right to drive just because they are less able does this mean they shouldnt drive???

This does not make them 'thick' not everyone has learning difficulties but some do.Try to be open minded.

Right... I thought I had to check ONE answer for that question (out of 6), re-reading the book, I see that I had to mark TWO (take it to a local authority site or a garage). I'm obviously getting confused with another question! I still maintain that some of the questions were difficult, for example the one below:

Which FOUR of these MUST be in good working order for your car to be considered roadworthy?
    A Temperature gauge
    B Speedometer
    C Windscreen washers
    D Windscreen wiper
    E Oil warning light
    F Horn

NOW, I know the answer but as a learner driver I would have thought EVERYTHING had to be in good working order. If you're doing your theory test too early it's more a question of learning answers by rote rather than actually understanding why you're selecting a particular answer.
As for the next bit, anyone who cannot find one of the thousands of part time jobs out there, in shops, bars, cafes, etc etc, is workshy, no matter their claims it being impossible

And if that really WAS the case NO ONE would be unemployed. Interesting then that unemployment is set to rise to over 2 million...

No, there is a difference between a low paid weekend worker stacking shelfes for 6 hours a week and a grown adult having to find a proper job to support his family

Anyone can get a job that pays poorly, its finding a job to support your family that is tricky

If a youngster cannot find a weekend job after looking for years he either does not want one, or really needs to buck his ideas up

I was one of the few kids at school who had a part time job, well several part time jobs. I baby-sat for one family which later turned into baby-sitting for several families, I did a bit of waitressing and I also had a job in ummmm... a mushroom factory! :o

However when I went to University 180 miles away from where I'd grown up, I couldn't find a job for love or money! All the waitressing jobs had been snapped up already (I asked in every cafe there was!), no one was going to let me look after their children as they didn't know me from Adam, which is fair enough, and I couldn't get a bar job because they simply didn't believe I was the age I said I was. (I'm 31 now and I STILL get ID-ed buying alcohol. Seriously!). So I didn't work at all whilst at Uni, and instead I went home at Xmas, Easter and of course the Summer and worked my old part-time jobs to earn enough money to support myself for a few weeks of the following term.

There is more than one side to every story. Perhaps the OP's son has not fully applied himself to looking for a job or perhaps he's tried really bloody hard and still hasn't gotten lucky?!

The hazard perception's a tricky one...I found it tough - got minimum passmark. (35/35 in the regular theory...) - that said, I think it's more random than anything...I don't think passing or failing it has anything to do with "skill" or anything like that...
