home insurance with a criminal record

I have been trying to apply to various insurance companies for home contents insurance. I have an criminal record for assault which was a moment of madness quite some years ago. I have been told that I cannot get home contents insurance with a criminal record! I would understand if my criminal record was for something dishonest like fraud or theft but am absolutely gobsmacked(probably not the best word to use in the circumstances ha ha) that I am being refused insurance for this reason. Does anyone know why? Also does anyone know of a company who might insure my home contents?

Convictions become 'spent' after a certain period which means that you do not have to disclose them to insurers even if you are asked if you have 'ever' been convicted.
May I ask how many years ago the conviction was, what the sentence was (i.e. was it a fine, probation, prison etc) and how old you were when you were convicted? Then I can work out whether it's spent or not.0 -
if living with someone else, could they apply in their name? do a search for insurance brokers, and give them a ring.
is there any support given by the prison service, CAB etc, regarding rebuilding finances etc?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
