Does anyone cut their own hair...and do it well?

I have very long hair, and have just been trimming the ends myself for almost two years. It got very long, down to my tailbone.

Last night I decided to cut it. I wanted to get rid of the bleach that's been growing out and was in the lower third of my hair. It was only in the top layers, so I thought I could keep the underneath long as a base layer...So I watched lots of Youtube videos of girls showing you how they cut their own layers in their hair, and then decided to do it. It worked really well. I went to bed really impressed at how well it had turned out (considering I can't even cut in a straight line).

Then this morning, I decided to cut more off. I wanted to get rid of the blonde tips.

Bad idea!!!!

It went WRONG!...now I have to go to the hairdressers this afternoon and get it fixed. I may have to get it cut QUITE SHORT!

Oh well...at least now I can say I've cut my own hair and have a laugh about it!

Does anyone else cut their own hair?

I definitely will keep on trimming it myself once I've got it cut - it saves you a fortune.

I cut and colour my own hair and yes it does save lots of money.
My hairs also quite long and always ends in a V shape rather than straight across. Recently the OH cut it straight across and he done it lovely.
I do go to the hairdressers but rarely.
I also looked for inspiration from the internet and found most of the information fitted in with how my hairdresser layers my hair, so i was pleased with what i found.

Mine is currently cropped fairly short so I can't really do it myself. However, I work at a university and the students union has a hairdresser. The ladies there will do any cut for just £4.50. Needless to say, loads of staff frequent the place. Bargain, and smashing ladies too!!

Yep i cut my own hair. I went once to the hairdressers, on my wedding day and WHAT A MESS!

I used to get the V shape, not so noticable if it's in a pony tail but does need tidying up if you wear it down a lot.

The best advice i can give is to look after your hair, use soft products like serum and wax rather than hairspray and gels, these dry and make the hair brittle.

Invest in a good but low maitainance cut, something with growth potential, a few long layers.

If you blow dry your hair, use a serum, this add's definition to layers and stop the style looking flat.

Treat your hair to warm olive/coconut oil treatments, the ends will be less prone to splitting.

When I was little I had very long hair and my grandad used to cut it for me using the belt method:

Brush your hair so that it's all hanging down your back.

Now get a belt or a piece of string and put it around your stomach/chest at the level you want your hair cut. Tie the belt or string securely. Leave room to breathe!

Now get someone to cut just below the belt/string taking care not to let the belt slip.

No more wonky haircuts!

Try a barbers - I got mine done for 3 quid and its a great job

LOL this reminds me of when I was younger (19) and I was travelling in Europe staying in youth hostels. One night, after a few drinks, I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror and thought my hair needed a bit of a trim. I decided to take matters into my own hands, using the only pair of scissors available - those on my swiss army knife!

You would think disaster would have incurred, but everyone thought I'd got my hair done (by a hairdresser!)

I regularly trim my own fringe BTW, have done for years! (Much to hairdresser's dismay- prob cos it means less profit for them!)

My OH trims my hair in between hairdresser visits usually. We got a lot of tips and advice from "you tube" of all places and it's been the best help.

Best trim hair when it's clean and dry.
