Advent is a pretty big name in itself - I had an Advent laptop before and it was great :) I was actually considering this one myself :)

If you ARE buying it - order it online and make use of some of the discount codes available on MSE to save some more money. If you have broadband (or even if not) you don't NEED a wireless connection- you can run it using cable but wireless is really great especially for a laptop :) Its a pretty good price and I don't see you getting one much cheaper for that specification for a brand name (IMHO). You can always go in store and have a play around on it a bit first as well :D

Ask on the techie board as well for a more techie answer :)

thanks for that wanted a wire less connection so i might actually see him now and again as he will be able to sit in the lounge or in his room and he wont be confined to one room we already have 2 computers on a network but all them wires a real pain so will need a cheap card
the ibm thinkpad from staples at 399 was also a good price nearly same spec i think will have a look at codes thanks for that

You can't do this because it is a "Collect @ Store Item" only

When you go to the checkout you never get the opportunity to enter any discount code.

64mb internal graphics is going to be very poor for playing games. If he just wants it to use MSN and play simple online games then fine, but don't expect to be able to play games like Half Life 2, Sims etc.

The laptop is Here You can get a discount code which brings the price down to £332.50 + £5 P&P. If you go through a Cashback site like Rpoints etc, you would also get another few % discount as cashback.

Must echo the above if the laptop is for playing games the onboard graphics of that Laptoop will struggle with most recent games. Can't really play games (ie Call of Duty2,Quake etc) on these lower priced Laptops need to pay out a bit more.

what spec would you recommend good enough to play games
    any certain make ?

  • if you want to play the latest games (call of duty 2, quake 4 etc) the laptop will need a dedicated graphics processor(intergrated graphics are useless),

there are basically two makes , ati and geforce

with ati you need at least an x600 model or above (x800)

with geforce you need an 6600 0r 6800 or the current best which is the 7800(which is very powerfull)
