E`mail from Banks / Building Societies

Over the last week or so I have been getting lots of e`mails from Banks etc asking me to verify this and that, and two from the Halifax this morning telling me they have closed my accounts!

Of course I know they are scams and also I don`t have any accounts with the so called banks who are meant to be sending them. I was wondering is there anything I can do to stop them coming, can I set anything up on the computer, can`t work out why only now and I have never had them before.

All advice much appreicted, thanks.

have you published your email address anywhere (maybe on a forum?)
signed up to any 'dodgy' sites?

as to stopping them, now way. you can set filters in your email client to block some of them, but you may also block some legitimate mails

  • there should be a 'mark as spam/junk' option somewhere depending on your email host. This will stop it from coming into your inbox

I`ve been clicking on the button to report them as junk / spam. Can only hope it eventually works.

Whatever you do don't reply to them, or click links in the messages which say "click here to unsubscribe" etc, as that will confirm your address is real, and you'll just get tons more spam.

    Ignore and delete them all.

No bank will e-mail you to ask to you login and enter all your details.

Never act on these email requests.

If you use internet banking, always type in the site address yourself.

It's only a matter of time before virtually any e-mail address starts to receive spam.

I work for a bank and we would never email customers asking them to verify their login information. If I was you I would contact the banks directly (either by going into a branch, looking on their website or telephoning them) and they should be able to give you details of who to forward them onto (all banks have a fraudulent email department). At least they will then be aware of a new set of phishing emails going around.
