how to get hold of child benefit

Can any one help, I can NEVER get through on the 08453021444 number I have tried at all times of day from 8am till 7pm I get charged every time I ring but just get a message saying calls are recorded you are paying for this call and then immediatley after it says sorry we can't answer your call doesn't even ring once,
been like that for couple of months now, and I really need to talk to them, I put in a claim for an additional child who came to live with us, at the same time I informed taxcredits.
tc adjusted our claim straight away, so we told housing benefit office of the change in circumstances but as child benefit is not sorted they can not put him on as a dependant but they took tax credit adjustment into account and have now stopped our ct and h benefits

I have emailed cb but no answer.

    hi
if you don't have to pay for normal landline numbers, try one of these................................ 0191 2251144
    0191 2251000
    0161 2103086

i got the numbers off " saynoto0870" try ringing them and asking to be put thru to the right department

    good luck x
  • just a quick note the 0161 number above is the actual child benefit helpline but rather than just hanging up after the initial message you get put on hold, which at least is a start.

    thank you mandy moo

Think you would be able to use the telephone in your local HMRC enquiry centre as well, as they have priority lines where you get straight through to child benefit office, no queue at all.
  • we dont have a hmrc centre I live in a small seaside town in cornwall! we have a very small jobcentre who are useless and that is it.

I always use the 'if you are overseas' number. It's free for me because I get free landline calls and it doesn't do that cut you off straight away thing!
