Economy 7 hours

Options
I have an Economy 7 meter and my supplier is Atlantic. I'm trying to understand exactly which hours the night rate applies to. I phoned Atlantic and they say 01:00 - 08:00 but this information I found on the Eon website seems to suggest that times may vary (I'm in area 11).

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks.

  • In some areas it depends upon the type of meter you have. There are similar questions on the forum and it's worth searching to see what other people have replied.

Obviously the Eon info is a 9 hour period in total so being limited to 1-8 could well be right, particularly if you have a radio (teleswitch?) meter.
  • Thanks for that, just had a look and it's a radio teleswitch series 3.

    Your supplier won't know.

    Your dstributor will.

If you have a time switch near your meter you should be able to see the time dial with the on / off markers.

If you have a tele time switch your distributor will tell you the exact times.

My distributor is Eon in the East Midlands, and the tele switch times are 01:00 - 08:00 all the year round.

Some suppliers offer good night rates, and you can make savings even without heating so its worth doing your calculations

Of course the supplier will, and in this case it looks like they have already provided the right info.

My information is the supplier does not know, as the times are specified by the distributor. Can someone who works for a supplier confirm this?

The distributor manages the radio signal to the tele switch, and will inform meter operators on the times to set for mechanical time switches.
  • My supplier confirmed that the tele switch is managed by the distributor; that's why the times vary from region to region apparently. However, they still had access to the information.

I still don't understand why on Eon's website it says "7 hours between 11:30pm and 08:30am". Why say that if it's actually 01:00-08:00 all year round?
  • I work for Eon and I can find out the times of E7, E10 or any similar product. How can I and my team advise customers without that knowledge? Yes the times are specified by the distributor but they tell the suppliers, it's a crazy notion to think the companies who deal directly with the customers would be in the dark.

Kerbyn, different meters in your area have different E7 times. Your meter in that Mpan is on night rate between 1 and 8am.

Thanks for the information, but can you access details of the settings for mechanical time switches anywhere in the country. I was in the industry up to 5 years ago, and I know that mechanical time switches were set to times that took into account the load pattern of a particular substation and these did not appear on suppliers records. - Just trying to find out more information.

I doubt if the whole country would be allowed E7 to come on and go off at the same time.
Apparently even the tv programmes are a course for concern, as in all kettles going on at the same time after a long episode of soaps.
