Double Glaze Sash Windows?

I'm going to have the sash windows in my house refurbished and draught sealed. I'm toying with double glazing the north facing sash in the living room as this is the coldest room in the house. I'll be using a firm, not DIY.
Has anyone any experience in double glazing sash windows? Have you had any problems such as failed glazing, changing the character of the window?

I had new sash windows fitted to an extension. They were hard wood with double glazing and very well draught proofed. They didn't use balance weights like the old ones. I had no probs with them, but I was forced to sell the house after a couple of years, so I don't know how long they lasted.0

will you be keeping the existing windows and rebating the existing to take dg units?
have you thought about secondary double glazing0 -
Ventrolla do a apparently very good job of refurbishing sash windows including draught sealing and double glazing. I understand that if you have small panes of glass (eg. 6 small panes over 6) then some firms tend to use stick on glazing bars which totally change the look of sash windows. I think it's something to do with the glazing bars not being able to support the double glazing. If you have a single pane of glass I think it will be alot easier to do.
If your building is listed you will need to speak to the Conservatrion Officer at the council because you might be changing the character of the windows.Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.0 -
I dont think you can put double glazed units in old sah windows ? there is not enough room to fit them in - The draught proofing / overhauling works well but is time consuming therefor expensive at about £200-£250 a window0

I had quotes for new double glazed sashes to be fitteed to my existing fames and these guys could do complete new windows for not much more. Worth a look.0 -
It depends on the profile of the window, if it's a period home these are likely to be very fine indeed, victorian are a bit chunkier. If you have to retain your old sash windows this could be a problem but if your not a listed building then it's pretty much plain sailing. As for failed units, any unit can fail go for a firm with a good after sales record.Give me life, give me love, give me peace on earth.0

The biggest problem you will have if you have a window with balanced weights is that double glazed units will be much heavier than the old glass panes. The windows will then be very heavy to open and most likely they will not stay in open position because of the extra weight.
You can get rebated double glazed units to fit single glazed rebated windows.0 -
there is a company called
the orginal box sash window company
Based in windsor very very good windows..
the use a very thin rubber strip inbetween the glass instead of that aluminium strip wich makes the windows thinner but due to the tech used it is 10-15 times more effectiv ethan traditional double windows..
the wood is knot free and when i worked for them 10+ years ago were hte only Double galzzing windows that were allowed to be used in conservation areas and listed buildings......
BAD POINT....
