Credit Card refused

I have a bank account with the Abbey bank.I've had it for about 6-7years.I recently applied for a credit card from them and was turned down because I am 'unemployed'.

I am not unemployed I am 'disabled and because of this don't work.

I get disability living allowance which is payed into my Abbey Account each month and income support which is paid in each week.

I have a Capital One credit card but wanted a card with a lower interest rate.

Any suggestions

Fiona

  • I suspect that in some circumstances "unemployed" and "notemployed" are treated the same way.

    Fiona,

Given your income is mainly benefits, I think you will find it tough getting a good value credit card.

I'd suggest you try to pay off your existing capital 1 card each month and then only use it for emergencies.

In order to pay off your existing balance, I suggest you try your credit union or even see if Abbey will give you a small overdraft which should be cheaper for you.

    Good luck.

I was accepted by MBNA whilst declared unemployed - with a small credit limit - but one they increased very quickly after using for a while. This was when other lenders would not accept me.

I mentioned this recently - so will do so again here - Marbles seems to be a straightforward card to obtain [run on behalf is HSBC] and gives 0% for 6 months on balance transfers [although not on spending]. A note about this card though - if you do get it which is that you should make at least one purchase every 6 months [Jan-June AND July-Dec] in order to avoid a £10 non-usage fee. Otherwise a nice car and website.

    Good luck :)

A minor point but I believe Marbles is run by HFC Bank Limited.

That's right John but HFC was acquired by HSBC in the last year [A 'little' small-hsbc.JPG appears on stationery etc] so they are unable to transfer balances between HBSC and HFC anymore.
