just an update on my last post, since we sent a letter back to thomas cook a few weeks ago saying - we were discusted with how they have dealth with us and that we booked a package holiday with them therefore they should take responsibility - we have had another letter from them today saying they are still looking into our complaint and will get back to us so fingers crossed!

we are just going to keep trying and trying until they get sick of us, i suggest other people do the same. Its not right that these huge travel companied get away with the appaling service without offering some sort of compensation.

This thread is actually from 2008. Why dig it up again? It's probably no help to the OP.

just returned from Goa this morning, overnight flight...10.5 hours, after 8 hours in the air we had NOT even been offered a cup of tea, when queried with a scottish male steward who looked like he had been on the booze for 3 days, he replied "you didnt book a meal" stated that only people who pre booked a meal were "entitled" to tea or coffee, THIS WAS A LONG HAUL FLIGHT!!!!!. then went on to say to me "No pay, no get" and walked away
the sooner THOMAS COOK GO BUST THE BETTER, also once you have booked a flight from them ..you THEN pay approx £23-28 per suitcase per person, however small or light your check in luggage is, this is ANYTHING YOU CHECK IN.
THEN [text removed by MSE Forum Team], THEY REQUIRE YOUR PASSPORT NUMBER, THEN TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN BOOK ON LINE YOUR SEATS THIS WORKS OUT AT £10 PER PERSON EACH WAY, BUT THEY BLANK OUT MOST THE SEATS ON THE SEATING PLAN SO IT LOOKS LIKE IF YOU DONT RUSH TO BOOK YOUR PARTY WILL ALL BE SEPERATE ON THE PLANE....WE DIDNT PAY, DIDNT BOOK SEATS, DID A PRINT OUT OF THE AVAILABLE SEATS ON LINE AND WHEN PHYSICALLY CHECKING IN AT GATWICK NEARLY ALL THE SEATS THAT WERE ORIGINALLY BLOCKED OUT WERE AVAILABLE AS WE WERE EARLY AND WERE THE 2ND COUPLE TO ARRIVE AND CHECK IN, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CHECK SCHEDULE FLIGHTS BEFORE USING THIS AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL COMPANY THAT TREAT YOU LIKE CRAP, WORKED OUT CHEAPER IF WE HAD GONE WITH AIR INDIA, 42KILOS OF HOLD BAGGAGE FREE, UNLIMITED FOOD AND DRINK...FREE, [text removed by MSE Forum Team]

Sorry this doesn't make any sense, can you elaborate? Do you mean you had to pay excess baggage?
THEN THE BIGGEST SCAM, THEY REQUIRE YOUR PASSPORT NUMBER
Thats called API - Advanced passenger information. It is designed to enhance border security and has to be provided for some destination, India being one. This is not unique to TC.

Nobody is making you pay the £10 to prebook your seats and they are hardly going to gain anything from blocking some out. I've prebooked my seats plenty of times with them and have on occasions, seen pretty much the whole plane empty as i was one of the first to do it.
How do you know that all the seats that were blocked out were available? Did you make them check every single one?
WORKED OUT CHEAPER IF WE HAD GONE WITH AIR INDIA, 42KILOS OF HOLD BAGGAGE FREE, UNLIMITED FOOD AND DRINK.
So why book a charter in the first place then?

I'm sorry but this is just a rant at TC. You make it pretty clear that you have issues with them from the outset when you have printed off the seating plan to take to check in.

To be fair, Air india aren't getting you to GOA without a change of plane in Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore.
    Thomas Cook and Monarch are.
Its a trade off. direct charter + crap service or Indirect flight and better service.
I always go Scheduled but I know plenty who prefer the direct charter

Here we go again another Thomas Cook basher.

How do you know the steward had been on the beer he may actually have been working on return long haul flights and was jet lagged.
Thomas cook do not add on the price for checked in luggage after you have booked its shown in the costing at the time of booking and this is what happens if you book flight only you pay for hold luggage or just hand theres no free minimum of 15kg like on a charter package.
Selecting seats is your choice again you don't have to pay if you don't want to select. As for the meals i'm surprised you didn't get them free but if when booking if it asked you to select inflight meals if required then that would give you the indication that they weren't being provided for free.
At least you didn't have to pay to check in at the airport like you do with the low cost carriers, oh and at least TC list upfront what extras you have to pay for unlike low cost carriers.
I think you'll find that the seats that were blocked off were the ones in the front 10 rows which on long haul used to be the premium seats which TC no longer sell as premium because of the taxes but you can buy these seats for the return journey so on the way out i don't really know what happens to them as i don't work for the airline but i suppose the check in staff give them to nice polite pleasant people as a nice gesture so perhaps thats why you didn't get one.
Oh and most airlines want your API before flying.
Oh well, i'm off for a nice busy day at work, looking forward to reading the postings after mine on my return.
