The Dell Dimension 3100 (D12316) looks ok for your price range:

Add the "Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Stereo Audio" to the package as it doesn't come with sound. Cost £17.63.
Note the "free" printer doesn't come with a cable which costs £12.93+VAT extra. Also the printer should come with ink cartridges, but replacement will cost £50 for the B&W and colour set. If you already have a printer and are happy with the quality then keep that one and sell the free Dell one on ebay.
Cost without soundcard or printer cable: £638
Cost with soundcard but without printer cable: £655
Cost with soundcard and printer cable: £668
The prices include VAT and delivery.0 -

Don't you think some of your recommended components are a bit excessive for "general use" (as the OP described)?
I use computers for all sorts (music, photos, videos, web browsing, spreadsheets, databases, publishing, etc...), and have never managed to fill up a 60GB hard drive. Unless you download hundreds of films and TV programs I can't see why a normal user would need this much space...0 -
i have to agree with gizmo on this one, the specs put forwards for 'good' are the higher end of good, the suggestions are pretty accurate for future proofing though and i guess that is what mr_fishbulb has gone for.
the best advice i can give that hasnt already been given is, if you will spend £600, try and get the most upto date fastest, biggest you can for your money. are you going to need a new monitor? or are you keeping the one you have? this may save you a further £100 or more which could be spent on the important things like cpu and ram.what is the plural of moose?

I was making recomendations on what you should be looking for if you were looking to spend £600 - it's quite difficult to find a PC with components under what I said were good for that sort of price, I was just giving an idea of what to expect so you don't get ripped off.gizmoleeds wrote:mr_fishbulb:

Fair enough then , although as a money-saving website, we would be better recommending she spends lessmr_fishbulb wrote:I was making recomendations on what you should be looking for if you were looking to spend £600 - it's quite difficult to find a PC with components under what I said were good for that sort of price, I was just giving an idea of what to expect so you don't get ripped off.

gizmoleeds wrote:Dell are the biggest computer company in the world (I made that up but if I'm wrong then they're not far off). They have millions of customers, so of course there will be some who are dissatisfied. Just like there will be dissatisfied Asda shoppers, Play.com customers, BBC viewers and O2 subscribers.
I have a Dell. I have had a couple of problems requiring Dell's help. On both occasions I was pleased with the support they gave me. There are many happy Dell customers out there as well - far more than there are dissatisfied customers.
Dell regularly win customer satisfaction surveys, and IMO they deserve it.
Dell is a good company.0
