Hi There,
I too have a hearing problem. Ive not got any other heard of hearing friends! I can only hear fully in my left ear. My right ear has i think 85% deafness (crnt remb exactly). I use to have aids after aids as i have funny shaped ears, very small an very hard to get one to fit! I had a headband with a box when i was at school and all my friends though i was listening to the radio! I now dont wear any aids because i got bullied in secondary school because of the aid i was wearing. I get through life but with lip reading and aparently i crnt speak quitly or whisper!
Hope to speak to you all soon xSuffer from: Techtrology or fallots, Rhmertoid Artheritis, Asthma, Short signed, Patienally death in right ear, depression, eating disorder and S.A.D

I don't have any deaf friends either so its good to come here and share ideas etc, and to know that I'm not the only one! I'm trying to find out about sign language courses but nothing in our area at the moment, thank goodness for tv subtitles! I can't always tell whether I'm talking loudly or quietly and I've caused some embarassment in restaurants etc but I really cant help it so I'm not going to be made to feel guilty! Hope you find this thread useful... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Just finding out about mine. I'm getting a hearing aid as I can't hear on the left hand side. It was a bit of a shock to be honest, although I had suspected it for some time. Also has its comic side as unless I can see you are talking to me..... I mentioned it on another thread and a kind lady (you know who you are) explained a lot to me. I'm going for an MRI so they can see why I've lost so much hearing. I also have tinitus, and just starting to read about this too. I read you can get thingies that make noise that help you sleep. But, bit reluctant to buy one as its such early days. Best wishes to everyone on here.0

mouseymousey, they may offer you an appointment with a hearing advisor if you have one in your area. They should be able to advise you re coping with tinnitus and also about cleaning your hearing aid etc. I didn't have this as we didn't have an advisor in the county when I lost my hearing.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

With the noise generator for tinnitus, you can do your own experimentation.
DH swears by the BBC World Service for masking his at night, and the radio doesn't keep me awake, but if it did he could use a pillow speaker.
Or you can try a detuned radio, the white noise may be helpful.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

When it gets hot e.g. sitting out in the sun (not so much this year!) the aid cuts out. Basically it overheats.I then have to leave it on a cool surface for 5 mins to cool down. I have taken it back to the audiologists I bought it from, and they say it's from 'moisture in the tube' which is nonsense.
Does anyone else have the same problem?
Hi there,
The Metrix is very similar to the ReSound Air (in case anyone has this aid and has a similar problem.)
It sounds like one of two problems.
Either 1: the aid has a design fault -therefore cuts out at high temps. I have not heard of this (I use their aids a lot) although any piece of electrical equipment will have an optimum temperature but for general UK heat you should still be fine.
2; Moisture in the tube. This is quite common with this type of aid as the tube is really narrow. The ear "breathes" -i.e the skin inside the ear canal sweats a little and this moisture can block the tube. To check if it is this, you can remove the tube and see if the aid still "whistles" (i.e it is working) when you cup your hand around it. To stop this moisture problem I would suggest trying a smaller ear tip so it lets the air (and moisture) out easier. (Your Audiologist can do this and it should be without cost to you). Your aid will then need to be readjusted (i.e running a feedback/whistle check) which takes a few seconds.
Whatever the problem is, it needs to be sorted for you and that is the Audiologists job so don't let them fob you off!"I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants." A. Whitney Brown0 -

try wearing your hearing aid just at home, presume you arent at secondary school now so hopefully by wearing htem at home you can build up the confidence to wear them outside. i am sure it would make a world of difference to you and another thing it would help you out on is whether you are talkng quietly or shouting. thats more likely to happen if you dont wear your aids.0 -
for lipreading and signing classes try asking at the local deaf club if they know of anything.....some deaf people do the classes either at the club or elsewhere so worth enquiring there.0

When applying for a Disabled Persons Railcard, how would you go about getting a "Social Services stamp" whatever that is? Don't have a battery book at the moment so just checking to see if I can get it sorted without having to arrange for a battery book too.0

I think that local authorities social services depts should have a Social Worker who provides advice etc to clients with hearing problems. Whether this person would be able to arrange a stamp, I don't know - possibly only if you were already known to them.
How long will your battery book be gone for? The railcards themselves seem to come extremely quickly!Signature removed for peace of mind0
