My Hammer - Find Local Tradesmen for any Job (FREE)

Options
Hi Everyone....

Thought this site might be useful for anyone who needs any help with DIY or Gardening Jobs....

www.myhammer.co.uk is free to use, you post the details of the Job that you require doing and then qualified local tradesmen will bid (quote) to do your job. You then chose which quote you would like to accept based on your best offer. Of course you are not obligated to chose any if you dont want too.

I've just posted to ask for a Boundry Fence to be erected (Quite a Big Job) and I've got a guy to come round next weekend who's only charging £75 Labour and he's offering the equipment very cheap too.

I've saved loads of money doing it this way and its much easier than calling round local merchants for quotes etc

  • There's also http://www.ratedpeople.com/ who ask you to rate the tradesman afterwards, so it's like a recommendation. I only got one chap come back for my roof, and he wanted a mint for the job.

For myself have found ratedpeople poor, i had people from miles away wanting to quote me. You only get 3 choices.

Best so far is mybuilder, a lot more choices, still loads of quotes for miles away.

I'm intrigued? £75 Labour for a 'big' fencing job, please do tell?

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised too but it's a genuine offer, I guess times are Hard in the building trade! I was actually quoted £225 for the Labour and equipment but we decided to buy our own Panels as the ones we wanted are not the standard type. We consulted with the tradesman by phone and email to discuss our requirements it was all very easy and best of all cheap! We would have probably paid between £50-£70 to an unqualified person anyway!

In response to the other comments... My Tradesman is loacted over 30miles away, I had a quote from one closer to home but they were more expensive. I guess people are willing to travel for the work so dont let it put you off.

So, he's got a 60 mile round trip and an 1½hr Traveling time?
Are the posts to dig out for the panels or is it just a case of fixing panels inbetween existing posts? How many panels are there?

    Yes 60 mile round trip....

We dont have an existing Fence but we cleared the area ready for the Concrete Posts to be set. His Quote was for 5 Panels + Concrete Posts + Gravel Boards + Concrete Mix , however we may need more Panels/Posts because we have a tricky corner to build around, but as we are buying the Panels ourselves anyway the Labour cost still stays the same :)

Mrs Chips, my Mum was quoted £700 for a boundary fence last week. One side of the garden only, about 10m I think? The back fence is done already and the left side was done by that neighbour so she only needs opne side and that was the quote. I think I will see if he can come to Glasgow :rotfl:

So, he's got at least £10 fuel + Nigh on a days work with 1½ traveling time, for £75?
After TAX, NI Insurance and other costs, he's working for about £50 a day or less, in all honesty that is suspisiously cheap. In my experience, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.
But I hope it works out for you. ;)

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.

I have checked the guy out, he has a landscape gardening business, he also has other reviews on My Hammer for similiar Jobs and he also been very professional on the phone and via email.

Like I said times are hard, I guess some people are prepared to work for £50 a day - I personally have just worked a 8 hour shift for nothing (Zero, Zilch, Nada!)... the joys of being Self Employed eh? So I know that i wouldnt turn down the chance of £50 right now!!

I'll keep you posted... Job will be completed next weekend (Weather Permitting!)

I would be careful of this site, I tried it recently on quidco, posted a job and then went away for a week (or 2), on my return I had a couple of quotes but in my inbox there was an email to say that if I didnt allocate the job in the next 7days it would be allocated to the lowest quoter and this would form a legally binding contract, now firstly there is no mention of this on their site, indeed it says you are under no obligation at all....but this seems to mean that you have to remember to decline all quotes in the right section of the site (which you cant do or are away). I declined the quotes and heard no more but it would be interesting to see how this site would try and claim for this legally binding contract when there is no mention of this in the terms and conditions section of their site!!!!!
My advice would be avoid myhammer because of this dodgy attitude to business
