Ebay "Account Accessed By A Third Party" Help

Hi Everyone,

I only tend to use eBay when looking for something and I don't think I've properly logged into the site in some months but while looking at an item this evening I decided to log in and bid. When I tried the password I thought was on the account it didn't work - as it had been a while since my last log-in I simply assumed I was using the wrong password and clicked "forgot password", went through security and set up a new password. I've also started using another email address more recently so decided to change my email address. After doing that I went to the item I wanted to buy and clicked "buy it now" and got this message:

Your account may have been accessed by a third party. In an effort to protect your account, we have put a temporary block on bidding, selling and the ability to send messages to other eBay members until we can safely restore your account to you.

I quickly opened live help and talked to a representative who went through a series of security questions to ascertain the account truly was mine. After she was satisfied she restored my account. She also told me that the third party had been listing dvds under my name (friends and smallville.) I initially thought it might have been a case of my logging in after some time and changing my email had prompted them to think I wasn't me but it seems my account genuinely had been hacked.

I am very careful with secuity and know all about phishing ebay emails so I would never click through to anything on one of those and my password was a strong one so I am at a loss as to understand how this could have happened. The eBay rep said she couldn't tell me when the fraudulent activity occurred or anything more due to eBay privacy or somesuch.

I am very concerned if someone has managed to get my ebay details they may have managed to extract other details from my computer - I have several bank accounts set up with online banking and also several email addresses. I understand most of my bank accounts have extra security that they probably wouldn't be able to get through but it's worrying all the same.

If anyone on here has any experience of this happening I'd be grateful for any further help or information. Thanks.

Regards

Michelle

You haven't mentioned antivirus / antimalware software?
You might have a keylogger - in which case I should take a trip to the techie forum quick smart!

    Hi fay,

Thanks for your relpy - I've been suspecting a keylogger myself which is why I'm so worried really. I just can't see how else they could have got in  My computer has been exceptionally slow lately and just seems to be getting slower and IE crashes constantly - I'm now on Firefox as of yesterday as it was impossible to do anything. I have many different malaware programs and AVG anti-virus and have run a ton of scans over the last few days due to the slowness and crashing. I'll start a thread up on the techie forum about the computer. Thanks.

    Regards
