Are you a college or uni student? If you are you can get a free copy of windows server 2008 which is almost identical to vista if you enable the interface module.

Farcry on a linux box?, sorry, but Crysis made a linux version available for download a month after the Windows version (it runs 3-5 fps faster & uses the same install cd for all the maps and stuff). You still need the windos CD to install maps & sound effects etc.

Crysis doesn't use OpenGL which Linux uses, it was designed around Direct X9 and Direct X10 for Windows. I think you mean the Dedicated Server for Linux that would run multiplayer games, not the actual game itself.

linux is most cost effective way - and the windows server optiion - but if you need windows then buy an OEM copy from somewhere like cclonline.com or ebuyer. vista homepremium OEM is probably the best vista VFM and then theres always XP pro OEM

playing games on a netbook really wouldn't work, windows or no windows IMO.... the graphics ain't just up to scratch!!!!

go to a computer shop like cclcomputers (cclonline.com) buy some hardware and an OEM copy of windows.... that *MAY* be cheaper!

If you're a student then have a word with your department IT folk as they may be part of the Microsoft Academic Alliance. If they are then you'll be able to get a copy of Windows XP and Windows Vista Business Edition for free.

I can't believe that anyone would find it difficult to install stuff under Ubuntu.

How difficult can it be to go to Applications, Add/Remove, tick the apps you want and click OK?

    Try installing hardware....

I have given my neighbour a pc and a usb dongle so he can use my wireless internet connection, but his pc will onlt start up in safe mode. Tried everything i can think of to get it working so i can install the software, but cant. Whats the cheapest way to get a new opperating system for the pc?

Question: Why do you need to go buy a new operating system? If there's a windows licence sticker on the PC, it has a legal copy of Windows on it so all you've got to do is get hold of the appropriate Windows installation CD and reinstall it.
