Where now for UK plc?

With North Sea oil and gas in decline and the earnings from financial services severely impaired, for sometime at least, what are the prospects for wealth generation in the UK? There are pockets of activities which seem good including perhaps pharmaceuticals, aerospace, tourism, oilfield services and some other specialised engineering activities in various niche markets, although most may suffer in a world recession. In major areas of manufacturing and technology the UK has either too high a cost base or is less advanced technologically than its rivals. I ask this question wondering whether the UK is a good place to invest and if not perhaps where? I know that some UK companies have earnings from activities in other parts of the world.

This is Thatcherismic chickens coming home to roost. Let's have service industries, they screamed. But there is nothing to service. A safe place to invest in at the moment is Japan. They have hardly suffered from the turmoil here and in the States (Nikkei-Dow excepted), because they are in a different phase of the economic cycle.
My own personal opinion is that this country is finished.
