Moral dilemma?!

I once got distracted at an ATM (big strapping policeman running past with guns - mmmmmmmm
), and walked away leaving my ten pounds and cards in the machine. Ended up having to cancel the card, but galling that the person behind me swiped my tenner. It was my last tenner, and I ended up having a 13 mile walk home in the !!!!ing rain as a result.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -
...so if it can't be traced, it's okay to keep £200 that someone gave you by mistake when you know it was an error?
And, actually, I don't believe it won't be traced. It will show an £800 withdrawal, but there will be a £200 cash deficit when they cash up at the end of the day. They will find the error because they know patterns of money that go out, and the bank will track it back, using CCTV to find out which customer if required.
I understand the dilemma, especially during this climate, but it is wrong.
I'm quite surprised that people on here are advocating taking something that you know isn't yours. You didn't save it, you didn't earn it, and you know where it belongs...it's not like you found it on the street. You know who gave it to you, where they gave it to you, and when you spend it, it won't be as a result of your own hard work.
I can just imagine someone on here posting that they had lent money to a mate to help them out, and accidentally gave them too much - and now this friend was denying they ever had it. People would be up in arms, and rightly so! Yet...it's okay if it's the other way round?? And if it's a bank?? I'm surprised that sits comfortably with some people.
The fact that you even asked the question tells you that you know it's wrong. It's a moral dilemma because it's morally not right. Do you really want to be jumping every time you go into the bank, or use your card, or get a phone call in case the bank has traced you?
HTH.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
Recently, I banked some money, with one of the cashiers, at my local bank. I remember it was a £115 cheque and £300 in cash. Anyway, I took the receipt, however, it wasn't 'til I got home and checked my online banking that I realised that only the chq was showing. Panicking, I checked my receipt and this only showed £115 also! It was later afternoon so I wasn't able to ring the branch until the following morning.
Funnily enough, the minute I did ring and explain the matter, I got put through to the manager who said 'I've been waiting for you to call...'.
Not that I'm trying to say whether you should own up or not but there must be some way for the cashier to check exactly what went in and out and who to.
There is a moral to this anyway, I now check the receipt everytime! It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?0 -
Of course it's theft. You know it's not yours and you know who it belongs to. TBH if it was anyone other than a bank of course I would say take it back but banks rob us all the time - overdraft charges, late fees, mortgage admin fees, absorbing interest rates cuts...
Let us know what you did OP!0 -
take it back be honest , regardless of the banks etc it is knowingly depriving someone of money
