Help Wanted by techno~numpty!!

Hi everyone. I recently installed a wireless network, using my acer laptop with a linksys pcmcia wireless card. I have a siemens gigaset wireless router connected to an unbranded adsl router. Everything has been working fine for a few months, and now I can not get on line wirelessly.

I have the icon on the tray at the bottom of the screen showing the wireless network. When I right click on it it shows 'connected signal strength excellent' Nothing has been changed regarding cables etc. When I click on Firefox or Thunderbird nothing happens. I have reverted to my wired BB connection.

Any suggestions gladly received!

Many thanks

Phil

Have you added any sort of Encryption to the connection, as a friend added some to his Netgear router, and the connection showed as "active" but it couldn't tal to the router because the encryption setting wasn't set on the PC.

Can yuou access any other Internet based programs, for example, updating your virus scanner or anti-spyware software, or is it everything related to the Internet. (e.g. If you can access the Internet by updating your virus scanner, it is a Firefox problem etc.)
  • Hi Tiger ~ can't do anything at all. Virus scanner won't update, no connectivity at all.

  • Are you running a firewall on your laptop? Try disabling it temporarily and see if that makes a difference.

Right-click the tray icon you mentioned and click Status. On the General tab, what's the number of packets sent and received? Click the Support tab and post all the information shown there. Try clicking Repair.
  • Chippy, thanks for trying to help!

Will go off line and click disable and try again.

    Packets sent 366662 rec'd 5
Support: gives info, ip address, subnet mask, default gateway all with numbers after (don't want to post here).

    Will try disabling the firewall.

    Cheers

if not, try going back to a slightly earlier restore point by using the "System Restore" function

Hi, already tried that one!! Thanks anyway!

Its really frustrating as the icon in the system try is showing the network, with excellent signal strength. However when ever I try to connect using IE or Firefox, nothing happens.

    Cheers
