Just the sort of biased comment you'd expect from a Tory hack like Daniel Finkelstein. Yes, Brown was very foolish to claim or even imply that he had abolished the business cycle. But at least in Brown's defence most (not all) of the causes of the current economic crisis are international. The Tories managed to foul up the economy largely themselves in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Also the current crisis discredits Thatcherite deregulation as well as Brown's claim to have achieved economic stability. And, although Finkelstein won't admit it, he probably realises that Brown's 'no time for a novice' line will be quite effective. If Cameron had any sense he'd shuffle boy George aside in a few months and bring in Ken Clarke as shadow Chancellor. He, at least, has experience of dealing with an economic crisis having dealt with the wreakage left by Major, Lamont and Lawson.0
