Car insurance - now uninsured/no claims bonus?

Options
This is a question regarding my No Claims Bonus and what will happen to it as I've read numerous FAQs and not found an answer.

The scenario..
January 2005 - Sold my car, no longer needed. Had built up 2 years NCB to this point.

February 2005 - Let TPFT insurance policy run out as I had no car.

March 2005 - To make it clear at this time I had no car and no insurance.

If I were to buy a car this month, would I still have those 2 years NCB to my name or would I be reset to 0 - even if I went back to the same company?

I just can't imagine that if someone went through a stage of being uninsured due to not having a car that it would reset the NCB, my problem is I can't find any text to back this up and wondered if anyone here knows.. maybe there's a limit on the period of time between being insured that they keep the NCB alive? ie. I can see a good reason to cancel the NCB if the driver has a gap of say, 10 years between being insured.

Any help appreciated.

I don't mean to be unhelpful but this is probably a question for individual insurers. I am sure some will allow the NCB and there will be others who won't. In the same way, some will allow NCB against a second car and others will not. You can only really get a definitive answer by putting your situation to insurers when the time comes. I would expect you stand more chance by using your previous insurer though but I think the length of the gap will be crucial.
  • Ask your previous insurers, i.e. the ones providing your cover until Feb 05, to provide you with a letter confirming the amount of NCB you have or if you have a copy of your last renewal notice this should also have your NCB on it. Depending on the length of gap you leave between cars this may affect what NCB you're offered but I would expect your current level of NCB to be valid for 2 years by many companies.
  • The standard industry rule for continuance of allowance of ncb after a break in cover is TWO years

Don't forget to keep your documents proving the amount of NCD as the insurance companies do not currently share this information outside of their own group.

Group meaning like Directline/Tesco/Privilege etc that work on the same systems.
