Double bill after switch

Options
After taking Martin's advice to switch to a capped tarriff in August we switched to the cheapest tariff at the time which was with EDF from NPower.

We've now just gotten 2 bills, 1 from NPower and 1 from EDF. After ringing NPower they said that EDF hadn't told them we had switched (although on their database it said they were and aren't supplying our electric) and so they were going to continue to charge us.

EDF said they have sent off all the details of the switch and that they are providing our electric.

At such a bad time of year (especially with christmas coming up) we can't afford to be paying 2 electricity bills. Where do we stand on this issue and who do we pay?

What meter readings are they using? Are they both charging for the same period?

I would get the switch confirmed and get EDF to sort out what they're using as their opening meter reading. You may have to pay both suppliers for some of the electricity used but they'll be 'sharing' the total payment for the units used.
  • EDF are charging us from August - October whilst NPower are charging us from July - October (both actual readings)

We've no problem paying NPower for July but it's more the sheer cheek of them to turn round and say 'We've not got confirmation from EDF and despite it saying on our system we're not supplying your electric, we're still going to carry on charging you anyway until EDF tell us to give you a final bill'.

So ... EDF's opening meter reading should be NPower's closing reading? I would have thought this was for EDF to sort out.
  • You'd think so. Will give both EDF/NPower a ring tonight and try and chase up with them both the issue and update the post.

Thanks for the speedy response by the way.

I think the switch over reading is the important thing to get across and to get everything in writing. Good luck!
  • I read on here recently, someone say that it was impossible to have 2 suppliers billing you at the same time

Don't envy you OP having to sort this mess out :(
  • You should check both suplliers are quoting EXACTLY the same details; meter serial number and meter point reference number. Both should be on each suppliers bills and you should also check the meter serial number is the same as shown on the front of the meter.

You could have a crossed meter issue which means both companies will continue to bill you until it's resolved!

Eh? You do mean that the OP may have to pay NPower to a particular date and reading and EdF after that date and reading?
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

Well yes, since the switch over date is in dispute. There may be something owed to Npower. So long as their closing reading matches EDFs opening reading, I would think the OP will have to pay both as billed.

I don't mean pay for the same units twice.
  • But the OP doesn't appear to have a final bill yet so the account isn't yet closed.
