And what a lovely gang they are here!
You can phone them, takes about 20 mins to set up, in fact mine took 24 mins and I thought it was free call but it has been charged on my phone account but not too bad £1.24, would have cost me more to go and park to do it in the branch.

Mine was agreed on the phone, I know some have had to produce more information and take it their local branch, and I now have account number paying in book, and also electron card, will not be using this account until after I go BR as my wages are going into my mothers account.

When I entered the IVA (now failed due to ill health hence BR about to happen) I had overdraft and loans with Barclays the advice I was given was get all money out, joke there was none left in there, it was up to the max on the overdraft, get my wages into a new account, and Nat West was suggested as a step account (IVA is the same as BR on terms of what you can have as a bank account).

I opened it, (have to add here I was asked at the interview, as I went to the branch, was I bankrupt or in an IVA, at that point I was neither) so I got my pay dept the new bank account details, and on day of wages paid in I checked they were in the right account. Did not want any disasters that they had gone to Barclays before I phoned them up.

I then phoned Barclays and cancelled all direct debits, what could they do, NOTHING, she did them all on the phone for me.

Oh and the co op will also set up your Direct Debits for you they told me.

Keep the questions coming someone here will always be willing to try and help you and also offer a shoulder to cry on, and even the odd joke to lighten the mood:D

I am concerned that if we cancel all DD before BR, can they close down our overdraft facility and basically swallow my wage.

Give your local County Court a ring and ask for the section which deals bankruptcies, then you can ask whether they do an appointment system or a walk in service. If it is appointment ask what the lead time is for appointments ie: if you were to book today when would you get an appointment. But be aware that this can change and might become a longer wait or a shorter wait.

If your local court does not deal with bankruptcies they will tell you which one does.

  • Hi Everyone,
Im new to this too, so jumping about threads at the moment. i wasnt aware that if bankrupt your tax code changes???? can someone tell me more? also I was wondering if i need to tell my employer?? I work for the NHS but dont have any role that involves money.
    Thanks XX
  • Hi elie,
No, you don't need to tell work. HMRC will contact payroll to change the tax code to NT (Nil Tax), which means the OR will take your tax to go to creditors. It's all done automatically, you don't need to get involved at all. If payroll ask you why the code's changed, you can just say "who knows? Aren't I lucky!!" (Thanks I think to Deedee for that little gem!)

What will happen with a Nil Tax code is the tax you would have paid will be in your paypacket. You keep this to one side, you MUST NOT spend it. When the OR's representative gets in touch you then make arrangements to pay them (I believe they have just changed to a company called Moon Beever.) You NT code will last till the end of the financial year ie 5th of April or if you change employer then you will go back to normal tax.

This is a link from the Bankruptcy help sticky.

    Nil tax (NT) coding/IPAs (MSE)

this a link to the sticky I would suggest you read through the first post on here ther is a lot of useful information and don't hesitate to ask questions.

  • Thanks to everyone again. Im getting confused about what to do with the bank account?? I haven't really got anyone to get our wages paid to, so do i open a Co-Op account now, have it sat dormant until we go bankrupt, and then transfer utilities and wages in? Or can i get my wages paid into it say a month before? What will the OR do to that account. Will it be frozen? Take my wages? Questons, Questions, Questions.....

  • OK. I have set up mine and the OH's, co-op joint bank account. I have to say they were very helpfull. I told them i wanted a joint account and that we were going to go BR. The lady said that was fine, and they could do it over the phone there. So 5mins later we have a joint Co-op account!! We don't have to show any id as well, so another step done. So now we have to look at the forms. The CCCS said they were going to send me some advice leaflets and links to were you can download forms but haven't. I'm confused, can someone tell me what we need to fill in to do a joint BR. Many Thanks.
