Have you checked the wheels for missing balance weights or the tread for something stuck to it?

A couple of years ago my mum told me that the steering on her Merc was funny and that there was a bumping motion as she drove along. I checked the car first, then drove it, and indeed it was strange. It wasn't until I checked again that there was an exhaust hanger and the rubber bush impaled on the centre of the tyre.

Chuck it back at VW and let them diagnose it then? No cost, and like I say, not an unheard of fault...?

  • Take it to KwikFit!

They will replace the break discs and shoes and shockers and and rear box and will tell you you need a service om your aircon, 4 tyres while you're there, BUT they will give you a free air freshener and you'll still have a wobbly steering wheel...

Check there's not too much pressure in the front tyres as that can give you a sort of tram lining effect (I think is the correct terminology) where the steering wheel wobbles.
  • steering rack is going to be replaced along with some other electrical bits and pieces!
