Bloody Tesco Anytime Internet...!!!

Hi folks,
For the last 5 or so years, I have been a customer of Tesco Anytime Dial-Up Internet.
Recently with the bargain deals on mobile internet I decided to switch to one of them.
I e-mailed Tesco to tell them I wanted to cancel and also sent them a letter to their address from their website.
I went on holiday later that day but when I got back I realised that they had sent me an automated reply to say that "we cannot make changes to your account via e-mail due to data protection, so please ring us. For anything else, reply to this e-mail and we will look into your request"
I have since received a letter from them to tell me that they could not collect the last two payments (because I cancelled the DD) and that I owe them £25.
Their own T&C's state:
"You can inform us that you wish to cancel this agreement following the expiry of the Cancellation Period at any time by writing to us or call us on 0845 650 8000. If you do so, this agreement will end and you must therefore stop using the Service either immediately or at the end of the period for which you have prepaid. You must continue to comply with this agreement until the time you stop using the Service."
Can anyone advise where I stand.... I know I should have sent it recorded delivery but I thought doing e-mail and post I was belt and braces anyway...
Really can't afford to be paying that £25

In my view you have notified them in writing. I would send a copy of your email to their postal address and notify them that the £25 is not due.0

I really hate companies that hide behind "Data Protection" issues. There is none here. If there was any issue about security, they could call you to confirm personal data.
Mind you, I didn't know anyone was still on dial-up!;-)0
