'Telewest & Onetel' OR 'BT & Just Dial'??

Some advice needed ...

I currently have my landline from Telewest (£10.50/month) and I am looking at getting the OneTel service (£0.99/month for free eves/wkd). Being a Telewest line, I am bit restricted on options so they provide a white box which goes between the phone and the socket.

My alternative is to get a BT line (£10.50/month), transfer my number and then get the Just Dial service for the free eve/wkd calls.

All in all, I will save £1 a month .... is it worth the hassle of taking the new line, trasnferring the number etc? How long is it likely to take? I know that my house used to have a BT line several years ago if that makes it any easier.

Whats are the 0845/0870 charges on each option? Please note that I dont make international or mobile calls from landlines?

All help appreiated.

    * Or Primus Saver.

    BT is required by its licence to allow its line users access to all other providers (1899, 18185 etc.) as well as CPS providers.

    BT is nearly always cheapest for 0845 calls but 18185 is now the leader for peak time 0870 calls (4p connection and 4p/minute).

    QED as far as I'm concerned.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    We were on Telewest (TV, broadband and telephone) but now have moved our telephone to BT. We did this to take advantage of the many, many, many cheaper call providers that BT have to provide access to but Telewest can block if they wanted.

    BT's line rental is the same price except BT do free caller display so this will save you at least £1.50 on telewest (£1.75 normally on BT).

    If you do take their broadband and TV as well, then Telewest will charge you an admin fee of around £3 per month if you don't take their line rental. To get round this I then threatened to move broadband and TV to Sky, etc as it would then be cheaper. They then agreed to credit us the £3 each month for 6 months as well as credit £5 that we pay for having an extra digibox. Sky charge £10 p/m but Telewest charge £15 p/m for additional subscriptions.

    We were told that once the six months is over then ring them again and they'll reapply the credits again. Apparently their computer system only allows credits for 6months which sounds about right as I believe that's all Sky's computer system allows credits for.

    See MSE Martin's Cheapest Call Provider article here.

    I have been on the phone to Telewest today and managed to negotiate Free caller display (indefinitly), and got them to reduce my broadband price too so I think I will sitck with them.

    As a result, looks like I will have to take the OneTel option for the free eve/wkd calls.

    Are 0845/0870 calls cheaper on Telewest or OneTel??
