BT phoned me yesterday offering me free E&W landline calls but for an extra £1.49 ? (cant remember the exact figure ) per month .They also offered me FREE 1571 answer machine ,and caller display and FREE telephone preference service .Now they are desperate .
The phone call started by them telling me I am registered with the telephone preference service . So why are BT allowed to phone me to offer me crap deals when they know I am registered with the TPS.

I declined there offer.

You have able to get the other services free for some considerable time now. (free 1571 and Caller Display are subject to you making some inclusive calls).

BT are allowed to call you to make you offers as your existing supplier, unless you specifically ask them not to.

I too thought the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan was free, but that they only way to get it was to agree to a twelve month contract period.

The Telephone Preference Service covers cold calling. You have an ‘existing relationship’ with BT, so they’re allowed to market to you. The Direct Marketing Association say that it’s best practice for companies to always get explicit permission before marketing to existing customers. However, most companies tend to assume permission, unless you actively tell them otherwise. Also, if you’ve been with BT for a long time, you probably signed up long before there was even a box to tick (or not tick). Just tell BT to record on their database that you don’t want them to pester you.

So could it have been the no minimum term £2.70 a month offer?

It could have been a mistake on the part of the person in the call centre. BT seem to be attempting to consolidate their customer base. However, if BT think you’re unlikely to leave, it would make more sense for them to try to get more money from you. You’re perfectly entitled to go with the free option. You don’t have to wait until you’re asked.

Do you have BT broadband? With the introduction of BT Webwise, it’s my opinion that BT are most focused on retaining broadband customers. While I know that some customers have been offered a small discount for agreeing to a new broadband contract term, locking a customer into a new telephone term would have a similar affect. Major competitors such as TalkTalk require you to move your telephone service and Virgin Media are usually only cost effective when you take their telephone service (or have no telephone line).

Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you for marketing purposes.

Your must be unaware that you can have your line rental with BT, and your calls with another supplier.
