Bank charges: Time for the Chancellor to help?

OK... now the Government owns 100% of Northern Rock, 60% of RBS, 40% of Lloyds HBOS, and is in a strong position to influence most of the UK's other high street banks. The banks are no longer independent - many are now owned by UK taxpayers. Surely it's time that they were stopped from imposing changes and withholding refunds?
Isn't it time that we ask the Chancellor to support ordinary people by leaning on banks to start paying back bank charges? I'm writing to Alistair and my MP to see if they can help. If enough people do the same we may get somewhere!

Where do you think the Government will get the money from?
Who is effectively going to pay for this whole financial debacle? The bail out of the banks, the refunding of the Icesave savers?
One way or another it will be the taxpayers, don't think the Government will be asking for even more money.0 -
My husband is owed over £2000 by Halifax and the claim is on hold.My fear is that, given the problems the Banks have got themselves into (and, sorry,I have no sympathy for them),that they will use this as an excuse to decline all claims currently on hold..Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.0

This worries me too. I have a £1400 claim against Nationwide stayed in the courts. I don't think we have much hope of winning these cases now as the banks can't actually afford to pay them.
Wish I'd got this claim in when I got my £2000 back from Barclays a couple of years ago!
Perhaps if they got back all the bonuses they paid out last year to their employees they wouldn't be in this mess.:mad:0 -

It doesn;t own 40% of HBOS/LLoydsTSB because until their merger there will be no rights issue and even then the government will merely be a major shareholder in the bank. Furthermore, the government will own about 15% of RBS underwriting further shares that could, if no one buys the shares, end up at 60%. The most likely scenario with RBS is 15-20% stake. You and I will be a shareholder by proxy of RBS and HBOS, we don't own them.
Furthermore, there is a legal process going on in the High Court called the OFT test case. Now surely we do not want the government interferring in a legal case?0
