MFI & Taking a Chance

Hi All,

Looked at a new kitchen and priced one up from MFI on Sunday, taking advantage of their home design service.

The total price came out at just over £5000..... it included sink, tap, dishwasher, oven, hob and all new units. We have a very small kitchen so felt the price was on the high side but it did include install too.

After a coffee at MFI the salesman came down too £4500 but only if we paid the deposit there and then, we left to think about it.

I had a day off from work on the Monday and popped into a different MFI and asked if they could beat the quote.... after some pushing the women got someone who could help me. The guy explained the store was one of the ones shutting... its company policy for them not to take business off other stores but.... times are tough and they were out of a job just before Xmas so didn't care about policy!

The guy came back with a price of £3700 for the exact same spec, with install and I checked and re-checked everything.. even threw in 'free' extended warranty for our dishwasher.

I naturally attempted to push them down even more which resulted in a firm 'we are at our lowest price'...... they wouldn't move... not even £2!

I understand the position MFI are in, may even be worse than they are letting on! BUT I paid the deposit on my credit card AND my business will get transferred to another store when they close.

So... if your after a new kitchen see if you can find a store closing down who will give you a damn good price.

Just for balance... had a call of the original store manager and he quoted me £4300 as their best ever price! I even tried to push them down but he wouldn't move from £4000.

I'm not going to be happy until it is installed and perfect but on the face of it I MAY of got a good kitchen at a better price!

MFI are flexible on pricing, always have been. It's a case of asking and standing firm. And it will depend on who you get as to how far they feel they need to move to get your business.

I really would not bother with the fitting service though. You will manage that cheaper elsewhere. Buy your bargain kitchen and have it fitted on a recommendation from someone else!

I spoke to 3 different people for a quote for a fit and it was about £200 cheaper than MFI quoted me but had no recommendations.

I agree to maximise my savings a should look else where... MFI agreed they would take off the install charge if I could find someone myself... will ring around again tomorrow.
  • Don't touch them. They have a huge admin charge levied on them and when you get a fitter out for a prefit nine times out of ten the price goes up for the 'extras'. Electrics etc...

Find someone that has had a kitchen/bedroom/bathroom fitted and ask who they used if they were happy with it and contact them directly.

A quote instore from MFI for £2500 can easily come down to £1400 if you go private.
