Help - Transfer files from mobile to PC?

I have a Samsung SGH-X680 mobile and PC running on Windows 2000. I got myself a data cable, compatable with the phone, plugged one end in the PC and the other in the phone. Nothing. I then found out I needed some software to enable the process. I downloaded Samsung Data Transfer Driver
http://nordic.samsungmobile.com/eng/wcms/products/phones/phonedata/download/NR-SGH-X680.jsp from the Samsung web site.

Still nothing. I expected to see the phone showing as an option on 'My Computer' along with Local Disk C and Compact Disk D etc, so I could drag and drop files from the phone to my PC. But no, clearly it's not that simple. I also can't see any way to 'use' the software installed on my PC - no icons or anything on the desktop and nothing shown under Start > Programes. The software is installed, because if I go back to the Samsung site and try to download it again, it confirms its already installed.

Exactly what is the process to enable transferring files from mobile to PC, should the PC and the mobile automatically recognize each other when connected by the data transfer cable? A step by step process would be appreciated if anyone knows how.

Thanks for helping!

The process is exactly as you describe, you don't even need any software, windows should just recognise the device and add on a letter for both the phone memory and card to your Explorer window where you can drag and drop files.

Some phones require you to put them into 'data mode' or something similar before they show as connected to a PC.
It could however be a W2K compatibility problem.
  • Well I've tried again, one end of the data cable in a USB port (I've tried a couple but it makes no difference) the other end in the mobile. If I open My Computer on the desktop I see Local Disk C, Compact Disk D, Control Panel and My Bluetooth Places. (The Bluetooth icon is legacy as Bluetooth stopped working a few weeks ago, which is why I got the data cable instead; figured it was a more robust solution).
Anyway, I've looked on my phone and cannot find any setting that would seem relevant under Connectivity or Settings which seem the obvious places to look.
