I always ask for the bulkhead seats - Ok they're behind the main toilets and they're quite hard to get as that's where the skycots go for little'uns, but you get so much more legroom!!

Usually so much room in that area that you don't have the problems of loo queues unlike the back toilets.

  • Just as in car seat belts there are cases where those flung out were the only survivors but in general I want a nice strong metal box around my easily damaged soft body. The strongest part of a plane is the wing section.
If there is a major fire then you're all up the proverbial creek

Yeah - why don't they make the plane out of the blackbox material???

Some airlines (Virgin Atlantic for example) charge an extra fee for emergency exit seats. If your airline doesn't charge extra, they're worth requesting because they offer extra leg room.
    Enjoy your holiday

Canadian Affair do charge for extra seats (£25 per passenger each way). However if you are on one of the Thomas Cook 757s they have a very respectable 35" seat pitch throughout, not bad for a charter flight, especially at the fares they are charging. If you are on an A330 the standard economy seats are more cramped (31" I believe)

The one with the black box under neath.....

But as long as you are able bodied and not travelling with children i would go for the emergancey exit every time, or business class, but since you are pre booking your seats no chance of that.

Try to aviod having any one sat next to you i.e. go for a window and a middle if only two of you as then your not having to get up for any one else during the flight.

The strongest part of a plane IS over the wings.

Statistically the safest part is at the back.

Less turbulence is experienced at the front.

Best leg room is at and exit.

The most annoying are near the bogs.

The worse seats are all of them now you cant smoke.

The best view is the pilots :)

'Black boxes' are in fact DAYGLOW orange (so you can find 'em) and made of Titanium, as are some parts of the 'plane (engine bulkheads etc.)

Agree with nelly re places on the 'plane.

    Other points.

1 Cabin Bulkhead seats are where mothers and toddlers get to sit....crying baby for long haul anyone ?

2 Food distribution in 'cattle' class can start either at the rear or front, depends on what the airline is and and on what route.

3 If you sit near the rear of the plane where the stewards are then you may get extra freebies if you ask nicely as there store cupboards are close at hand.

    Have a good trip.
  • I have been told air quality is better near the front of the plane - I have no idea if this is an urban myth or not but there is the added advantage of getting served food first (usually) and any leftover free mags or newspapers from business class.
  • First
    Business
    Premium Economy
    Cattle Class

    (in that order)

Not a great fan of flying myself but seem to have got over the worse part of my fears as i have got older. I would recommend the exit row or the last row before the exit row then you can "lay back" without pi***ng off the folks sat behind you. Try and get a row of 2 (if there is only 2 of you going) then at least you wont have some obnoxious git sat next to you. Try to keep away from the bulk heads as OP have said thats were the babies go and is there anything worse than having a baby sat crying for 5 or so hours while your trying to get some sleep.

  • Sit in the centre block if you have a 343 or 333 configuration (though not the middle two if its a 4 seat block. Centre block seats seem to be the last to get allocated and therefore you stand a better chance of having an empty seat next to you. You don't want two seats in a 3 block by the window as either you get disturbed by the window passenger or you are having to keep disturbing them.

Emergency door seats are wonderful if you can get them but they are in great demand and some airlines don't allocate them on-line. They want to see you to make sure you are fit and healthy as you may have to help in an emergency.

Bulkhead seats are good but you risk being next to grizzly kids. Why they allow them to travel at all I don't know - let alone free! They ought to go with the luggage and the animals in the hold.
