Wii help please

I bought a Wii off a friend of mine but having trouble setting it up. I have no instructions, but it seems relatively straight forward to put together but can't get the remote control to work. Have changed the batteries, the little blue lights at bottom flash when I press a button, its all plugged in and facing the sensor that I was told to put on top of the TV.
Do you think the remote could be broken?

You need to sync the remote with the console. In the remote were the battery is located there is a red sync button & in the console at the front is a flap, behind the flap is a red button, press the 2 sync buttons at the same time it should then work ok.
